Mexico’s Art Offerings

Mexico's Art Offerings

On a visit to Mexico I was struck by the amount of beautiful art objects that were available. Many were of low costs and were of materials that were easy to find. In particular I liked the tin art works. These were artworks made out of the thin metal of tin and puncuted and painted in order to create an image.

Often the tin artworks had been formed to frame objects and provided decorative additons to functional objects. The tin was used to frame mirrors and door ways. Other art works on offer were made out of wood and fabrics, they would even sell gold that was treated and prepared in the same way as the tin.

Intricate patterns were carved into wood and dyed into fabrics. Blankets of various colours were on offer cheaply. These could be used as throws, rugs and wall hangings as well as blankets.

Although we purchased some goods such as art works and more practical handmade items we ended up giving most of it away, as it was difficult to see the poverty that was on display when you went to exit via the border.

After seeing the wonderful items of arts and crafts on display at the markets when you returned and passed through the shanty towns it was not the most uplifting sights. Even though this country had such a wide range of talent in the areas of arts, this did not seem to improve their standards of living too much.

There were many items on offer when leaving Mexico. From chewing gum offered by children to crafts and home made flowers offered by ladies and girls. It is worth the visit to see the wonderful arts and crafts available and maybe even pay more than the asking price as most of the items being offered are worth it.
