Art and the Environment

Art can take many forms. Painting, writing, photography and sculpting are all classed as art but there are many other forms of art; encouraging debate from enthusiasts and theorists based around what qualifies as an art piece. For centuries, great thinkers have debated the question ‘What is art?’ and while some progress has been made there still remain many questions. This is because of the fluidity surrounding art. Art remains quite an elusive topic. This means that a person could list qualities that an art piece should have if it is to be called art but then an art piece that holds very few of these qualities will be produced, leaving the debaters back to square one. While the thinkers and art historians continue with the debate; artists all over the world continue to break down barriers through their art work, paying no attention to theorists.
Modern living affects artists because we have now entered an era that is aware of our environmental impact on the world. This means that artists are now introducing art work that is ecologically sound. By re using canvases or creating pieces that are made from recyclable materials, artists are responding to the environmental movement with great gusto. Artists are always at the forefront of any movement, in fact, artists usually start any movement because they have such incredible vision and foresight. Because of this, artists are producing art work that represents the world view. This world view and coinciding art work has created another facet for theorists to discuss. Even writers are responding to this by ensuring that their stationers provide them with recyclable material. Many writers are now switching to technological gadgets to keep a track of their notes or novels in order to minimise their carbon footprint. Art may take many forms but each one has responded to the changing environment and incorporated it into their art work.
